MYSORE: Bountiful days are here again. The Krishnaraja Sagar is just a few inches from the brim for the second consecutive year. This has forced the dam authorities to raise the outflow up to 80,000 cusecs by Monday evening. For the first time in 14 years, the outflow from the dam will cross the onelakh mark, hopefully by Tuesday morning, with heavy rain pounding the catchment areas of the Hemavathy and Harangi dams uninterrupted.
Dams chief engineer (south) T.N. Srikanta told The Times of India that the inflow presently is 28,000 cusecs with the dam water level standing at 120.45 feet against the maximum level of 124.80 feet. Its only a foot less than the "cushion level"of 122.6 feet. "The outflow into the river, which is barely 1,200 cusecs, will be raised to 35,000 by Sunday night and to 80,000 by Monday evening. The outflow from Hemavathy and Harangi dams too has increased to 35,000 and 30,000 cusecs, respectively."Some 25,000 cusecs of water is flowing in from the dams direct catchment area.
He said they have started releasing water into canals. Sources in the water resources department indicated that Tamil Nadu will receive 10 tmcft of water every day at the current rate of outflow. The dam authorities have asked villagers downstream to move to safety as theres a possibility of the outflow flooding low-lying villages. In 1991, 1.6 lakh cusecs of water was released from the dam which, in turn, flooded several villages and washing away the winged inmates of Ranganathittu bird sanctuary. Water level in the river had touched the Britishbuilt Wellessley bridge at Srirangapattana and the marooned villagers in the backwaters of Krishnarajsagar dam were airlifted to safety by the BSF helicopters.
